The new building will be two stories high. The first floor will feature a passenger check-in area with a self-service zone, as well as public spaces, cafes, other commercial areas, and airline offices.
The building will include all necessary technical spaces, such as baggage check and sorting areas, and rooms for engineering systems. Upon completion of the new terminal, the total area of Vilnius Airport's passenger terminals will increase by one-third, and passenger throughput will double (from 1,200 to 2,400 passengers per hour).
For this project Peikko Lietuva engineers designed DELTABEAM® Composite Beams and 610 mm diameter composite columns. A total of 0.7 km of DELTABEAM® Composite Beams were produced and delivered for the project, allowing the fulfillment of slim floor construction requirements.
Key design challenges were influenced by the unusually sparse column grid (12.6 x 12.6 meters) and heavy loads. Despite these conditions, the use of DELTABEAM® Composite Beams did not significantly increase the thickness of the slab structure. An optimal uninterrupted beam scheme was used, allowing for only a 200 mm high flange below the slab.
Beams up to 15.7 meters long were manufactured and transported to the construction site as single elements for the project. For the support of DELTABEAM® Composite Beams, architectural solutions led to the use of modular, hidden various types of PCs® corbels instead of concrete corbels in the columns. In one location, a PCs® 15 modular hidden column corbel capable of supporting a load of up to 1500 kN was used.
Smooth cooperation between the project engineers and Peikko Lietuva designers ensured the successful and high-quality implementation of the construction project, meeting all technical requirements and client expectations.
